The major market town for East Cheshire, Macclesfield grew as one of the main silk textile centres of the country, renowned for the skill of its designers and for its richly patterned woven fabrics. The story is told at the Silk Museum, the Heritage Centre and many other buildings of great historic interest throughout the town. Cobbled streets, a handsome Market Place and pedestrianised medieval thoroughfares contain individual shops, major high street stores, indoor and outdoor markets.
Look to the end of Macclesfield's historic streets and you'll see the dramatic Peak District hills, creating a dramatic setting to the town. Within minutes you can be walking and enjoying breathtaking views stretching right across Cheshire.
Macclesfield Canal is within walking distance of the town centre and is these days populated with narrow boats - a lovely way to explore the countryside, towns and villages which nestle in these foothills.
The town enjoys a great community spirit, with regular concerts in the handsome Heritage Centre, little art galleries tucked away amid the streets of weavers' cottages and its own award-winning brass band.
