It was Macclesfield's role in the Industrial Revolution, as the greatest silk weaving centre in England, which brought it fame and fortune. This important piece of history is wonderfully captured in the award-winning Silk Museum, Paradise Mill and Heritage Centre.

Medieval Macclesfield is the principal town in the borough, among the 30 most wealthy in the country.
