From the Pennine foothills above Macclesfield to its confluence with the Manchester Ship Canal near Lymm, the Bollin Valley is served by a network of over 100 miles of waymarked footpaths.
These link the valley's often historic towns and villages with farmland, woodland, ponds, wooded cloughs and manmade features, for example Bridgewater and Macclesfield Canals and Manchester Airport.
There are picnic sites and a country park with a visitor centre and a programme of activities each year.
The A538 follows the route of the River Bollin quite closely from Macclesfield as far as Altrincham.
